Grades can determine the course of one’s life.

Is that fair, or are there alternatives?

In German public schools, performance is graded on a scale from 1 to 6, with 1 being the best and 6 the worst. This grading system begins in third grade and continues through eleventh grade. In the Abitur, performance is then evaluated using a point system.

Grades prior to the Abitur determine whether a student can advance to the next grade or must repeat the year; in the Abitur itself, the final grade determines the path a student takes after high school. Whether to pursue college or vocational training is the question one must then ask.

The final grade is based on oral grades—which depend on how actively a student participates in class—and written grades, which are determined by the evaluation of written assignments.

However, there are factors in a student’s life that can make it difficult to perform well in school. For example, family circumstances, learning disabilities such as dyscalculia (a disorder that impairs the understanding of mathematics), and ADHD (a developmental disorder that leads to inattention and hyperactivity). So, the grading system isn’t really fair.

But aren’t there any alternatives to this type of grading? Different countries have different grading systems; in Latvia, for example, grades range from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. In the U.S., grades range from A to F, where F means failing and A is the highest grade. Ultimately, none of these systems differ greatly from the German one.

There is, however, one system that is even used here in Germany: In Waldorf schools, no grades are given from first through tenth grade; instead, detailed verbal evaluations are provided that describe academic progress, talents, effort, and personal development. This system also eliminates the need to repeat a grade, so the class community generally remains stable for 12 years, regardless of academic performance. It is not until the Abitur that traditional grades (1–6) are introduced for report cards to facilitate the transition to vocational training or college. One drawback of Waldorf schools, however, is that the transition to secondary schools can be difficult for students; furthermore, in some cases, science subjects are neglected, which can hinder a student’s academic career. Added to this are the costs that students’ families must bear in order for their children to be admitted to these schools.

However, there are also other factors that play an important role in grading, namely the teachers themselves—specifically, whether teachers assign grades objectively or whether other factors influence their evaluations.

According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, teachers usually assess their own objectivity differently than it actually is. In subjects like German, this is perhaps not very surprising, and in fact, many scholars consider grading in this subject to be highly subjective and difficult.

In fact, studies have also found significant differences in grading even for math problems that are supposedly based on objective criteria. This can be explained by the fact that teachers have considerable leeway in grading, and it is left up to them to decide, on a case-by-case basis, how many points to deduct or award.

The grading system generally aims to evaluate students’ work fairly, following the principle: “Those who study hard and put in the effort will receive a corresponding result.” Critics and researchers, however, point out that academic performance is by no means independent of social factors. This was discovered, among others, by education researchers Kai Maaz, Ulrich Trautwein, and Franz Baeriswyl in 2011. In their study, they compared children’s school grades with their performance on standardized tests and found that children of blue-collar workers were less likely to receive good grades than children of college-educated parents with the same test scores, and even less likely to be recommended for the Gymnasium.

In summary, it can be said that our German grading system is generally based on a sound idea, but it does have many shortcomings, such as a lack of consideration for learning disabilities and social influences, or the subjectivity of teachers. As with many things from the past that weren’t entirely bad ideas, changes need to be made to this grading system to give every student the same opportunities.
